Noted Australian wine critic Jeremy Oliver notes “….. these Rhone Valley white varieties are enjoying resurgence across Australia's better wine regions, they're ….. a very interesting and worthwhile niche market.”
Originating in France’s Rhone Valley, they have a natural home in Victoria with a superb example from long-established maker like Tahbilk, and latterly from Box Grove, both of whom are making more restrained, but beautiful fruit character expressions of these grapes.
Tahbilk has gone one better and produces a blend of all three of the classic Rhone grapes with their ‘MVR’– a blend of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne. It’s minerally but with lovely soft fruit and a balanced, long finish.
For another first, Sarah Gough at Box Grove has gone out on a limb with a sparkling Roussanne – the only one of its type in the world as far as she knows. If you like great Champagne then this sparkling Roussanne will certainly be of interest.
Take a look at Marsanne and Roussanne – you will not be disappointed.
